Merry Christmas!

Merry Christmas!

As I write this, it’s Christmas Eve, and Ohio welcomed me home with a nice heap of snow and ice. On some level, I terribly miss this weather. On another, I’m glad I don’t have to put up with it very much.

So between times playing games and visiting with my family I’ve stolen away to post something here to my blog. Apparently, you’re reading it. As I’m checking around the various BeOS news sites (begroovy, haikunews, ICO, zetanews etc.) and BeOS project sites (haiku, beunited) I’m terribly distraught that haiku and beunited’s web server still seems to be out of commission.

The reason this outage bothers me is that I really wanted this gift to the community to originate from beunited.org, not me. Without beuniteds hosting this project, providing support and communications, and helping to organize it in the beginning, this wouldn’t be possible. Period. They deserve the highest praise for making this a reality. However, since it appears they’re still incapacitated, I figure I might as well let the world know that we BeOS developers are not only dedicated to our loves and hobbies, we care enough to take extra time to make juicy milestones that much more enjoyable. Again, this post was supposed to follow a show-stopping press release from beunited.org. They deserve it. They need it. Don’t underestimate or forget them. They’re great folks, do good work, and have a true dedication to seeing the BeOS continue as a stable, solid platform for the future.

But due to server hardware issues they’ve fallen silent. They’re working on restoring their ability have an effective web presence. Indeed their developer portal we’ve all heard rumors about is making progress I hear.

News of a beunited.org portal is not the gift I want to give to the BeOS enthusiasts around the world. Although it would be nice, it’s not my bag, so to speak.

No, ladies and gentleman, I have even better news. Far more appealing. Far more entertaining, and far more… well for me just bloody exciting.

Here’s a few things for the stockings…

In case you’re having trouble figuring out what that is… It’s BeOS R5 playing Yahoo Games!

But the real gift I’d like to leave you with is, this 39MB divx movie, or this 8.1MB QuickTime version. Please share this, mirror this, trackback, whatever. My poor DSL isn’t going to like transferring a this a few thousand times, so reencode it, shrink it, whatever you’d like to do. I just appreciate that I can offer this vague glimpse at what we’re cooking, how well it’s working, and the promise this next year will bring for BeOS.

This ride isn’t over, the fun is just beginning.

Merry Christmas!

HaikuNews provided divx video mirror.
Another Mirror – Thanks fyysik!

I should probably also go ahead and mention here that Andrew has been on vacation since last week. I’m on vacation right now. Translation: not much is going to be happening until the new year rolls around.
