This is just… wrong.

I just read the news at HaikuNews.org. Chris was nice enough to offer to mirror the demo video, knowing full well it would be a hit on their bandwidth. Apparently, someone thought it would be fun to download the video 500 times in one night.

I’m told that HaikuNews is allowed 100GB / month of bandwidth at their current pricing. Increasing that to 250GB /month would raise the cost a decent amount, but would certainly be less than the 2.5 cents / MB they’d face otherwise.

The only logical explanation for this is that someone has a vendetta against a) Haiku b) HaikuNews c) Me d) Chris Simmons, and wanted to run them over their bandwidth limit. This wasn’t even a slash-dotting for pitys sake. This was one IP address. ONE.

Since my server didn’t receive this kind of abuse, I feel pretty safe in ruling out myself. To whomever was at IP address 67.175.213.39 between 26/Dec/2004:23:49:36 and 27/Dec/2004:09:26:30, I can assure you the people getting hurt by this are not the targets you most likely intended.

While personally offended and indirectly targeted by this, I feel partly responsible. This should not have happened. Some moron with their head up their butt and unable to see past their sphincter did this. It dosen’t just hose HaikuNews. It hoses their readers, the developers they interview, and the people who work hard to keep BeOS a viable alternative for the future.

At this time, I know this.

Mr. or Mrs. 67.175.213.39, you subscribe to comcast cable broadband, and the ISP’s switches are most likely located in Bourbonnais, IL.
