My life is crazy!
Crazy, but in a really really good way.
I’ve had a hard time not writing about this, but it could have been detrimental.
I turned in my resignation this morning to my current employer, UMC. I’ve been here on location for two and a half years now, counting both full-time employment and consulting. For the most part, it’s been good to me. However I feel there are gross deficiencies and incompetence in the management of the organization and that it is a pitiful waste of taxpayers money in general. It’s my opinion (as well as that of others) that UMC could be run so much better, should be run better, and that the taxpayers of Mississippi deserve better. I can no longer ignore my conscience and continue to silently work here. I’ve tried to make an impact in the areas I can, and I feel that in some small way I have. Sadly, the benefits of modern technology seems to be lost on my senior managers, and I foresee the collapse of all internal development. This isn’t the forum to air my grievances, so I won’t. Suffice it to say, my career here was going nowhere fast, and when every attempt and appeal I made for some form of career path, prevalent compensation, or commitment to the projects and tasks I was assigned was met with resistance from my own managers. The only person who even seemed to care is an outside consultant who’s been working with me my entire time here, and with whom I share a mutual respect and gratitude.
I will be relocating over the coming weeks to Indianapolis, Indiana. My mother grew up there. I have a lot of family ties in the area. It’s about a three hour drive from where my brother lives, and approximately five to six hours from my parents. Traveling to see my family will be far cheaper (no more outrageous airfare to two minuscule markets), easier, and what not. I’m really excited about the move.
Even better, I’ll be working for a small company based in Indianapolis known as E-GINEERING. I’ve met the partners who founded it, I’ve met the people that work there, and I can’t believe how blessed and lucky I am to have the opportunity. These guys rock.
The downside to this move is that currently my attendance at this years Haiku Waltercon is now in question. I’ll be trying to get things sorted out over the next two weeks, and will continue to post here as things happen. The good news is, the people I’ll now be working for are aware of Haiku, aware of the beunited.org java port, and are very supportive of me being able to make it to waltercon. Did I mention these guys rock?
So anyhow, I won’t be doing much in the way of coding for the next two weeks. This is sure to be stressful, but also will be well worth it. Afterall…

Congrats on getting what looks to be a nice job! Have fun there close to home. And don’t freak out if you have to miss Waltercon over real life… I say that, as I still try to get over the fact that I can’t be there this year. :(

Thought complete is, mikesum32 :)
Congrats, bryan! Perhaps they’ll be more motivated to make it easier for you to attend WalterCon if you pass out E-Gineering T-Shirts for all your geek friends to refer potential clients to contact, as, after all, there’s a higher probability of attendees at something as obscure as WalterCon (may it not be obscure within a short time!) having connections than any other small gathering :)

Heh. They already have more work than they can handle right now, and they’d rather continue to work with the team they’ve assembled as they can than grow the company. They’re more focused on slow, stable growth than quick profit. I don’t think they even have t-shirts….
