Downtime!

Ok, so this server has been out of commission for the last few days. It wasn’t catastrophic (yet) but there’s still a lot of things not (quite) working.

Cause: Massive Disk Crash.

It appears the 40GB drive this server has been running on for years now finally got some bad blocks. In a really bad spot to get them — where the ext3 journal is stored. Luckily, we can forcibly mount the disk as ext2 (read only of course) and recover most of the data. It looks like I just got the mysql databases and web directory stuff back from the void, and I think I should have cvs back up in the (very?) near future.

Sounds like it may be time to look into replacing that drive entirely, Bryan :( . I don’t know what type of drive (SCSI or IDE or other or the make) but they have a finite life, and it would appear it may be time to at least move that drive over to something that’s not important for stability, such as mp3′s you have CD’s of, for example.

Frankly, I’m getting somewhat paranoid about the age of my own hard drives on my main computer: the youngest of them were bought in 99 (the U160 drives) and the 8 gig EIDE drive? I’m trying to remember…. somewhere after 1995 but before 1999…. and that computer has gone through a ground zero lightning strike, too, besides other things.

Always remember to never backup your data !

    Is that right?

Bryan, good you’re up again, but now something completely different; Voice-IP, do you know wether a Voice chat JAVA program does exist, wether it would work with your JAVA for BeOS?

I know there’s Wispher on Zeta but I haven’t got the slightest idea if it works (at all). Would be cool to have (voice-ip) tough. Something like skype or MSN voice-ip, or … Beshare! : )

The disk we’re running on now is a replacement.

The old disk is still connected, however is mounted onto it’s own mountpoint and in read-only mode right now. I’m restoring data from it (slowly).

The new disk is a used disk (as was the old one) of the same era, however a different manufacturer and hasn’t been running for several years straight like the old one.

Eventually (once I get my own place) I plan to overhaul the setup of the varnernet server. If I ever get my own house, I’ll be putting in a real wire closet… I’ve been plotting this for years, but haven’t had the means to do it. In the coming year I’m hoping to start to get this underway.

As for voip on BeOS & java….

The java port at this point has no audio support. We have not started the javax.sound packages, nor have we implemented the basic Applet.play() functions yet. There is a ton of work to be done on the port, some of which I’ve been eagerly waiting to do for nearly 7 or 8 months now.

My BeOS box remains in Mississippi. I will have it by the 14th of October at the latest. The next month will be -very- busy.
