Senseless reflection on where I was a year ago…

Over the weekend I was at my brothers place with the family, and they all mentioned I looked a lot thinner, even since Christmas. I knew I’d managed to start loosing weight again after I moved into my own place, but I had no idea how much weight I have lost. I’m actually getting back into shape, slowly but surely.A year ago, I was dealing with the excrutiating pain of a herniated disc in my back. When I went into the doctor, I weighed over 220lbs. I was in terrible shape. It had been a steady downward spiral since late 2000-2001. by the end off April I had managed to loose ~15-18lbs. I gained some of that back when I moved back north to Indiana.

Well well well, since moving in here, I’ve dropped a lot of weight. For the first time in four years I’m well under 200lbs! Shoot, I’m approaching 190 — I was ~175 in 2000 before the massive gain started, if I could get to 180, I’d be pretty happy. 170 and 175 are my ultimate goal, but I don’t know if I’ll make it that far. Stil, I’m pretty dang happy about this. My back dosen’t have the problems it had, I’m far more fit than I was, and I’m under 200lbs for the first time in a long time. W00t!

Anyhow, this is a pretty senseless entry, I’m just bragging. It can be done, and you gon’t need pills or gastric bypass to do it.

women – ladies, girls, chicks, females….

I’m increasingly of the thought that you don’t need weights or machines to get fit. I think I have plenty of weight on me, it’s just a matter of being flexible enough to get into a position where I can use that as the resistance to build muscle.

My old physical therapist would agree with me there. I plan on testing this theory. In the last two days I’ve managed to do handstands and a gymnastics bridge stretch. I never would have imagined I’d be able to do that a year ago.

Tai Chi is often done without anything besides internal weight and resistance, and note how effective that seems to be for a lot of people, over a very long period of time.

Without even getting out of the neighborhood, I can point out to you a route that’s over 3 miles long in a loop around the streets where the streets are wider and/or there are sidewalks: several days a week of fast walking around that distance will greatly contribute to your aerobic and cardiovascular health. To do the same loop I found, you’d end up with a little bit more distance than that, since your street is just off the loop, but not much more. That would be 45 minutes of walking at a brisk 4 mph (this is a speed I walk when recovering or slowing down from a run) and is very likely to get your heart rate into the proper zone.
