Weekend in Ohio, evening at home, tonight I hope to sand.

I spent the last weekend in Ohio at my parents house, and got to see the house my brother and his wife just purchased and are getting ready to move into.

The highlight of the weekend was playing with my neice. Who at just over a year old is becoming rather fun to play with. She has a stuffed dog named Buster, whom she apparently really likes. She dosen’t have top teeth yet though, so saying his name comes out as “Buffsssfffffff” with a grimmace on her face as she tries to do a “th” sound. Pretty funny stuff.

Her ability to communicate through simple words and the hand-signs she knows is pretty impressive. She can’t say the word ‘more’, ‘water’, ‘food’, or ‘thank you’ but she has signs for them, and when used with the words she does know (as well as general gestures like pointing) it’s a pretty effecient method of communication. Considering she won’t be able to speak what she wants for several more months, being able to sign it so early in development is nearly priceless. It really makes it easy when you say, “do you need a change?” and she starts making the sign for ‘get my stinkin’ diaper off me.’

We got home last night, and that’s when I got on #haiku on freenode, and was asked to do something about the OS X version of BeShare. So I did that while Kylene baked cookies and iced them.

Tonight I’m hoping to spend an hour or two out in the garage scraping and sanding down the cabinet doors.

I asked my (mostly ) deaf friend about international sign language, as opposed to American Sign Language or British Sign Language.

She said that basically it’s “pointing at stuff.”
