Haiku & the OpenJDK: No news is good news?
I’ve had a few people ask about what’s going on since I got in contact with Ian Murdock.
Short Answer: We’re playing the waiting game. Sun is a big company and it will take them some time to respond.
Long Answer: I basically wrote up details of what happened last time we made good progress on a port (we were behind the current release, Sun wasn’t interested in 1.4.x when they were months from releasing 1.5, they fell off the face of the earth, Haiku wasn’t near ready, R5 was dead in the water, etc.) — and what obstacles are in the way for starting working within the framework setup by the OpenJDK project. Basically, the project isn’t organized in a manner that is conducive to OS porting efforts. It’s perfect for small patches, bug fixes, tweaks to specific layers in the JDK / JRE. But an entire port of the JDK / JRE where you’re touching multiple subsystems, creating directories and files all over the tree, adding extensively to the build system, etc. … not really.
We’ll see how Sun responds to this — I tried to make it as positive sounding as possible, and would love to help them sort out their issues. We’ll see if they take us up on it.
Until then, there’s not a lot to do. Heck, there’s really nothing to do except to work on other things. So that’s what I’m doing.
Consider yourselves updated.
I have been keeping tabs on the status with Ian. About once a week I send him an email just to make sure he hasn’t forgotten us. :-)
