I’m not -quite- fat enough to be Santa.

But I’ve been in the workshop the last couple evenings, and I’m finally making progress!

Operation Poplar Toybox is underway, and making steady progress!

I’ve got the lid jointed and glued. This is made from a 1″ thick hunk of Poplar will end up being 18.5″ wide. It’s made from a 8′ long 10.5″ wide board, so there’s one edge that had to be jointed, doweled, and glued. This is the biggest, thickest hunk of wood I’ve used yet. The lid probably weighs 8lbs.

I’ve got one of the ends (either the front or the back, depending on how the other turns out) jointed, glued, and in the clamps. It’s taken nearly every clamp I’ve got to make sure it’s tight and square all the way around. The final width is 15.375″ (3/8ths) and it’s made up of two 5.125″ (1/8th) and two 2.0625″ (1/16th) inch panels all edge jointed, doweled, and glued.

The two shorter ends are going to be a bit different. :-) One will have the same exact panel configuration as the front and back, the two and two. The other, will have a 10.25″ wide plank and two smaller 2.0625″ planks. Why? To save wood. I planed down the leftover 1″x10.5″ to 3/4″, and I’ll rip it to 10.25″ and cut about two inches off the end of it. I’m using as much of the wood as I bought as possible. Due to knots, I had to go buy another 1.5bf today. Rather than just get the ~60″ hunk, I went ahead and got the full 8′ board x 6′ board, so I have a bit of ‘oh crap’ wood to play with, and plenty to make the drawer box out of. So far, I’m really enjoying this.

I figured out how to make the most of the wood on paper last night. I’ll only end up with a couple of scrap parts, and they’re going to be small! :-D

I’ll take some pictures and post them later… it’s coming along. This is going to be a good sized box!
