Garage Cabinet Progress
Here’s a shot of the two cabinets as of last night.
I dadoed and assembled the carcass of the second cabinet, and put the back and face-frame on the first cabinet last night. Check out those dado joints, and that face frame!
Little did I realize until last night, that these cabinets are actually face-frame cabinets if you follow the directions exactly. How nice.
The good news is, that didn’t throw me off much. I still have the New Yankee Workshop series on face-frame cabinets (where Norm builds a whole kitchen) on my TiVo, and I watched them all just a few weeks ago.
I don’t have (nor do I really want) a biscuit jointer, so my frame is attached in a manner that I’d rather not describe, but seems to be holding just fine.
One last photo.
Obviously, I’m using pretty cheap material. It’s just 9/16″ non-sanded plywood, and 1/4″ thick OSB for the back. I’ve been sanding things down as I go, which helps reduce the splinter factor. The face frame is cheap pine. I bought some pine to make the frames for the panel doors that will be attached to the front of the cabinets, and when I buy pine from a place like Home Depot, I always get at least an inch wider than I’ll actually need. The corners have a tendency to be all splintery on the corners and beat-up. The face frames are the extra that has been ripped from some of that pine. The splintered corners you can’t see, because it’s toward the back of the frame. Layout and position of wood can be the difference between a junky looking project and a clean looking project.
Anyhow, yes it’s a cheap cabinet. What do you expect for $35.50 / cabinet? Oh, and that price includes the (yet to be started / made) dovetail-jointed storage boxes that will occupy the bottom shelves. :-)
If nothing else, this has been an excellent practice project.
