Weekend Project: Scroll Saw Stand / Wheeled Cabinet
Having found face-frame cabinets are pretty darn easy to produce, that I had a half-sheet of 9/16″ plywood left over, have 14″ of empty floor space between the work bench and the shelving unit, needed to build a stand for the restored scroll saw, and had some things left that needed a logical place to be stored, I designed my own scroll saw station on Saturday afternoon.
Yep, I actually designed it myself.
It’s not -too- much. It’s a face-frame cabinet with a 3/4″ thick top. The bottom and sides are the 9/16″ plywood. I haven’t put the back on it yet, but I’ve got the rabbet to receive it set at 9/16″. I’m planning on using some of the 9/16″ that’s still left over, and affixing the top part with screws. You’ll see why when I post pictures.
The saw sits centered on top, the motor is mounted up-side down underneath it, on a sliding wooden base to allow for tensioning. There is a 2″ range of travel for the motor base. A 3/4″ wide channel was routed out of the top for the link-belt to pass through.
I managed to get the motor and saw mounted tonight. I don’t yet have the saw properly oiled (I need to make a trip out to the shed for that) so I didn’t run it long… but I did drench the bottom moving parts with household oil and fire the bad-boy up. It runs very smooth, passed the “nickel test” (stand a nickel on its side, start the saw and see if the nickel falls over) on vibration, and looks like it’s going to work out -very- well.
I’m going to mount the cabinet on some casters (with brakes!) to let me move the saw out into a good workspace when I need it.
I’ll have to post pictures in the morning (well, before I go to work anyhow), as it’s pretty late right now.
