Maxtor OneTouch III, 160GB external drives: Absolute Poo

About a year ago, while CompUSA was going out of business, I went banzai on buying up gadgets that I could use at prices I was comfortable paying. Especially after you figured there was zero shipping cost.

At the time, I was working on upgrading the server layout at home, and was getting OS X Tiger for my iBook. I picked up two Maxtor OneTouch III 160GB external drives. One was to be a server data backup disk (in case the RAIDs fail horribly), the other to be my TimeMachine backup.

Within hours of having the drives setup and running, the power supply in one of them failed. Since the servers are all running RAID, I decided that I’d use the remaining good drive for the TimeMachine backup. For the last few months, it’s been hooked up to my iMac, and working like a champ.

Until two weeks ago. Right before Elizabeth was born, the second drives power-supply (the 12vdc to 12vdc / 5vdc converter in the enclosure) went kaput.

That’s two dead drives. I’ve had an RMA on the first drive for almost 9 months, and never shipped it, because they said they’d wipe the drive. Frankly, I want my data intact. Especially with the TimeMachine backup drive. I want my data. I could care less about fixing the drive if it means my data is gone. The whole point of having the drive is to have the data. If you repair the failed drive but what my data%
