The cable connecting the trackpad to the motherboard was pinched and shorting.

The LVDS cable I got off ebay isn’t the right cable for the resolution of my screen. So thankfully that wasn’t the problem.

The new motherboard (with discreet nvidia graphics) is here, but I don’t -dare- try to use it without a new heat-sink that’ll pipe the heat away from the gfx processor. So I have the proper heat sink on the way… because that motherboard will be a significant upgrade for graphics performance…
