JavaShare 2.1 Alpha 2 - CVS snapshot

I've taken the time to fix a few small bugs in JavaShare today. The first caused a divide-by-zero error and would screw up the interface drawing. The second was relating to file permissions when uploading files to other users.

Along with these fixes I've uploaded an executable .jar file built from the current CVS. 2.1 requires Java 1.4 or later, eliminates the use of Apache ORO code, and utilizes the java Collections framework (which may result in a minor speed boost). More features are planned for 2.1 - this a preview release, and may be very unstable. You have been warned! Head over to the downloads page for the link.

JavaShare Goes OpenSource!

It's finally happened. After much time cleaning up the code, and waiting on on various pieces to fall into place, JavaShare is now officially open software, released under the BSD license. You can pick up the source code for javashare at beunited.org where the cvs is being graceously hosted.

I'm currently focusing on other projects at the moment, so if you'd like to help with JavaShare I'd be VERY HAPPY to hear from you!

JavaShare 2.0 confirmed to run on OS/2!

Thanks to Adam McNutt for sending in the screenshot of OS/2 (ecom station) running JavaShare 2.0! This adds another operating system to the confirmed list that JavaShare runs on properly.

JavaShare 2.0 Arrives!

JavaShare, the cross platform BeShare client, is now at version 2.0 and ready for you to download immediately. Now any system with a Java 1.1.8 compliant runtime and the JFC Swing class library (included in Java 1.2 and later) can chat and transfer files from BeShare users!

JavaShare 2.0 is a near total rewrite from the previous public release which was known as JavaShare 2 version 1.3. JavaShare 2.0 includes better response times, new features, lower memory usage, and less processing overhead. Just some of the features include:

  • Full File-transfer support
  • Better chat message processing
  • BeShare style username tab-completion
  • Expanded user preference settings
  • Full support for identifying files based upon mime-types
  • Lower memory and processor usage
  • Too many improvements to list!
